Lonnie Preis  0:01
Hello. Our guest, David Victor, Leanne Nichols, thanks for being on this podcast. We are pumped, stoked, jacked, excited, so pumped to have you guys on this show. Are you excited? I'm speechless. Leanne, how do you feel? So stoked. Kylie, how are you doing about this? You feeling? What do you feel about this? This episode is going to like, I'm excited.

Speaker 1  0:33
I think it's gonna be fun. I think we'll see a little more banter back and forth. Little

Lonnie Preis  0:36
little more banter from

David Victor  0:38
these guys. All right, Kylie, don't let us interrupt your lunch over there. Okay, like,

Speaker 1  0:42
like, call my head. Hey, don't call me out. Like that,

Lonnie Preis  0:46
calling her out on live podcast airwaves, whatever you call that tape delayed, podcast delay. Okay, we are gonna get to know y'all. People know y'all very well on this campus, but this is for the 1000s upon 1000s of viewers and listeners that we want to learn more about. You guys. So, couple easy questions, okay, first of all, what do you do? At Cleary, how did you get here? And you can't go, don't, don't tell us our whole life story. But just in a nutshell, how do you get here? What do you do? We'll start with that. Leanne ladies, first All

Leanne Nichols  1:17
right, I am the assistant athletic director for sports medicine. I'm also the senior woman leader. I was actually originally here as an outreach, outreach athletic trainer. When my contract ended, went and did my doctorate, and as soon as the position opened back up here at Cleary, I knew I wanted to come back. I love the small school atmosphere, love the people that I work with, so I knew I had to get back here as soon as the position was open, once I finished my doctorate. Love it.

Lonnie Preis  1:46
While David answers this question, the other question follow up to this is going to be, what do you really do? Like, what what do you really do? At Claire, I mean, I you do a ton, but what do you really do? Don't answer that one, but let's hear about what you do, your title and how you got here.

David Victor  1:59
I am the sports information director. Is the official title. I'm also the ombudsman of the university. Jumping ahead, no one knows what the ombudsman is. I don't even know what the secrets I'm kidding. So I got the job in March of 2021 I was previously a head basketball coach at a community college and on the west side of the state, and mutual friend said, Hey, you're good at the stats and writing write ups for the games. How would you like to do that full time? Bull said, Yeah, I didn't even know that was a career, let alone how do I go about doing that? So I applied, and I got offered the job, and I took it.

Lonnie Preis  2:44
The rest is history. The rest is history. I love it. Okay, think about that second question. Leanne back to you, what do you really if you had to sum it up, and what do you really do?

Leanne Nichols  2:52
Everything love Yeah, I am the student athletes, first line of care in mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, health, anything they need. They come in. They vent any injuries, they have any illness, they have anything on their mind. They let their athletic trainers know about it. We got to figure out how to fix them.

Lonnie Preis  3:17
Absolutely so true. They're so blessed to have you. That's you summed that up. Great. David, what do you what do you really

David Victor  3:23
do? I get paid to watch, talk about and write about sports. Boom. Love it. I'm I do the stats, I do the website, all the articles. I do the social media for the athletic department. I make sure that the live streams are working, hopefully, most of the time they do. I know our soccer and baseball games don't have audio. People All right, the equipment hasn't been working. You can stop commenting on the Instagram and Facebook pages, then

Unknown Speaker  3:51
fix it. The equipment

David Victor  3:53
was picked up and it's being fixed. I love it. It's very on air. It's very expensive.

Lonnie Preis  3:59
We are all about accountability. I love it. Just fix it. It's being fixed. I love it. So when we think Cleary sports, your your image, this picture, this face, everyone Cleary sports, boom. Well, as you say, David, you have said this. You got a face made for radio, radio there, and we are on the radio. But you know what? We're on

David Victor  4:17
TV. I'm amazed that the cameras haven't broken yet with my face. Oh no, they're

Lonnie Preis  4:22
just they're soaking it in. All right. Our next question about about y'all with Cleary, your favorite, very specific spot on this campus? What is your favorite spot to be in, to be at on on this campus? One spot,

David Victor  4:41
the lake trust stadium press box.

Lonnie Preis  4:43
Nice in the specific chair where you're you're go to, yes, that's your

David Victor  4:47
that's my spot where I I'm stating a baseball softball game. Just able to watch the game and then just enter the stats and the plays as they're happening.

Lonnie Preis  4:59
Dial in my favorite. Dial in Leanne.

Leanne Nichols  5:01
See now this is where you're gonna get me in trouble. Oh, no, I'm gonna give you a favorite spot. We won't mess with it. And then No, but all the athletes are gonna give me crap

Lonnie Preis  5:12
about it. Athletes do not, do not give her the business about this spot,

Leanne Nichols  5:17
because they're gonna think I'm picking a favorite, and I'm not. Oh, absolutely not. It's just a great view, and that would be sitting right next to the second opening in the third base dugout.

Lonnie Preis  5:28
Love it. I love the specifics there. I'm going to go there myself. I have not been there, but we've had people on this show say a specific seat in Lake trust Stadium as they watch their teammates or their peers play. I mean, you said a specifics? No, it's awesome. It's awesome. It's perfect. It's no it's absolutely perfect. I love it. Great answers. Thank you. All right, so we are now going to go into a little segment called Roll with it. Do we have any noise with that one? I don't know. Let's see what Kylie's got. I

David Victor  5:52
think you need to get an oasis sound bite. Oh, and play roll with it. There's a song by oasis. Oh,

Lonnie Preis  5:59
I do that. Yeah. All right, roll with it. Here we go. You guys. Before this, I asked you, what's the topic that you'd like to talk about? And the first thing that came to mind was movies. Okay, so just roll with me here. Let's roll on down the road. David, movies. What's a What's the first movie that pops in your head when, when I say movies, the godfather. Part Two. Godfather Part Two. Leanne, speaking of godfathers, do you know? Do you are you familiar with any personal godfathers? Anybody who is a godfather,

Leanne Nichols  6:24
like my own personal Catholic godfather? Sure. Or the lady that I watch on tick tock that used to be married to the Detroit mobster? Oh, that one, because that one I watch a lady on tick tock who talks about being married to a Detroit mobster all the time. I love

Lonnie Preis  6:37
it. Speaking of tick tock. David, tick tock, what's your what's your favorite social media

David Victor  6:43
right now? None of them, because it's a cesspool of just destruction out

Speaker 1  6:48
there. Clear University social media.

David Victor  6:52
Yeah, I mean, and that's

Leanne Nichols  6:53
because of what you like, get like, you just have so many opinions. You post very opinionated things on I

David Victor  7:01
haven't posted anything in forever. I've been trying outside of work responsibilities. I've been trying to take a break from social media.

Lonnie Preis  7:11
Got it. Speaking of opinions, you mentioned opinions, opinions. What do you feel don't share your opinion. But if you had a topic that you have the strongest opinions about, what would that topic be you feel most strongly about what topic, in regards to your opinion? If that makes sense,

David Victor  7:27
Chicago cuisine. Nice.

Lonnie Preis  7:29
Speaking of Chicago cuisine, what's the what's the first thing that comes to mind? What food comes to mind? When I say Chicago cuisine,

Leanne Nichols  7:35
that they have terrible pizza, I'm gonna take that back.

Lonnie Preis  7:38
Wow. Okay, okay. Speaking of pizza. David, speaking to pizza. David, what is it? What is a topping that you would not like to see on a pizza? That would you be like, Okay, I'm not touching it.

David Victor  7:51
I know I'm a fun guy, but Mushrooms,

Lonnie Preis  7:53
mushrooms, speaking of mushrooms, speaking of mushrooms, made me think of gardening. Garden. Do you garden? Yes, okay, best thing that you're like, get most excited about coming onto your coming out of

Leanne Nichols  8:04
your garden. Oh, I don't zucchini.

Lonnie Preis  8:07
Zucchini. David, thinking of zucchini, what would you put? What other food item would you put zucchini on?

David Victor  8:14
I wouldn't, because zucchini is garbage. Garbage. Zucchini bread, zucchini pizza. I don't do zucchini. I'm a picky eater. I will raise my hand and admit that, and zucchini does not belong in anybody's

Lonnie Preis  8:26
food, zucchini noodles. Speaking of garbage, speaking of garbage, how do you handle your the garbage at where you live? Is it? Is it picked up? Do you drop it off?

Leanne Nichols  8:36
Well, I live in an apartment, so I take it out to the dumpster.

Lonnie Preis  8:38
Okay, great. Speaking of dumpsters, David, what's the craziest thing you've seen thrown away in a dumpster, or actually in a dumpster?

David Victor  8:47
Well, today, not in a dumpster, but I did see my trash was getting picked up this morning, and some one of my neighbors put a washing machine out on the curb to be picked up by the trash.

Lonnie Preis  8:59
Speaking of washing machines. Leanne, what kind of what kind of detergent do you use? Can I ask that? Is that for your for your clothes,

Leanne Nichols  9:05
I use two different ones. My personal clothes. I use the Arm and Hammer. OxiClean for the clothes at work. I use tide sport with bleach, nice.

Lonnie Preis  9:15
Speaking of hammers, she mentioned hammer. Speaking of hammers. David, if you have a tool that you feel most comfortable with. What tool would it be?

David Victor  9:23
A hammer. A hammer. Yeah, okay, that's about it. I know very exciting answer. I love it, guys.

Lonnie Preis  9:28
This is great. This is a little roll with the segment. We went from movies to zucchini to dumpsters to hammers. I appreciate you guys just being willing, and the banter phenomenal. So that's our role with this segment. Thank you. You're very well, very well done. Okay, now we're

Unknown Speaker  9:46
gonna get down. Thank you. Little

Lonnie Preis  9:47
late there. All right. Okay, you did You're doing great. You are doing great. This is a little segment we like to call behind the curtain, so we're gonna get to know

Speaker 2  9:56
you a little bit better. Didn't we already use that one?

Lonnie Preis  10:00
I don't know now, it's ragged. Do it all the time. This is a rag after every comment. Okay, here's my question for both of you. Okay, this might be a little extended version podcast. If you could meet anybody on the planet who you have not met before, who is alive? Who would it be? All I need is the name of the person. Who would you like to meet?

David Victor  10:31
See they so they say, never meet your heroes. We're saying, meet your heroes. We're saying, meet your heroes. I want to meet Tiger Woods.

Lonnie Preis  10:39
Tiger Woods. Hang on to that good. Misty Copeland. Misty Copeland, good. Okay. Now back to you. My next question about Tiger. Tiger walks in this door. What's the first question you ask him?

David Victor  10:53
How do I stop slicing?

Lonnie Preis  10:55
Okay, how do I stop my slice? I love it. Misty, you run into her in the hallway. What's the first thing you asked? Misty,

Leanne Nichols  11:09
oh, God, I don't even know. No, okay,

Lonnie Preis  11:11
think about it. I'll get back to David, because here's my last question. About Tiger. You have a couple hours with Tiger. You can do nothing golf related. Okay, you have two hour window, David, let's hang Yeah. What are you gonna do?

David Victor  11:23
Let's go to B Dubs and get a drink. Just watch all their sports and eat some wings. And, I mean, he's dealing with some alcohol issues from his past, so maybe we don't have an alcoholic drink, but we can have Dr Pepper, yeah, water, you know. Okay, they have that. Would you buy? Would you buy? Would you offer to buy? I would offer to buy, but I would not expect to have to pay. What is he makes way more money than

Lonnie Preis  11:47
I do. What if you he let you pay? How would you feel?

David Victor  11:52
I mean, I I can then keep the receipt, get an eye graph, and be like, Dude, I paid. Yes, I paid for meal with Tiger

Lonnie Preis  12:00
Woods. Very good, very good. I love it. Misty. Ching. Misty, do you have a question for Misty? And then, what would you want to do? I

Leanne Nichols  12:08
think I would ask her what her dream piece is, and if she's already performed it like, what what piece was like? Her top piece that she performed,

Lonnie Preis  12:17
okay, let's say it's something that is not related to what she does. What would you do if you're, if you were to have a couple hours to,

Leanne Nichols  12:27
yeah, I would probably take her, you know, whether she wanted to go to the wine bar downtown or just a restaurant and get food and hang out and just get to chat nice about What, what it

Lonnie Preis  12:38
is. Love it. Love it. Okay, now we're going to get a little bit more, little bit deeper. I guess you could say who in your life from the past could be have passed away, or could be still living, who from your past has impacted you the most, and what was the was the thing they instilled in you the most, the greatest living or someone who's already passed on.

David Victor  13:03
You want me to go first? Or

Leanne Nichols  13:11
I would say the obvious answer is, parents, right? But I'm going to go with Beth, who was the head athletic trainer at ALMA she taught me a lot about things outside like the book, like the actual dealing with athletes being there for them.

Lonnie Preis  13:35
Like, yeah, everything you mentioned before, about the impact, the impact

Leanne Nichols  13:42
on a group of athletes. Yeah, that's great.

David Victor  13:45
David, how about you if one A and 1b which might be breaking the rules, but I'm the guest on the podcast, so I can do Okay, all right, yeah, I'm not sure about that.

Lonnie Preis  13:58
Well, we'll let him

Leanne Nichols  13:59
what is, Mike offers

David Victor  14:02
you can cut play this, play the music. You can you can edit it out later, like one A is my grandpa, Ben. Was my grandpa? Ben, he was a Holocaust survivor, and just obviously had to deal with all of that, but was able to come to America, lived the American dream became apparent to my dad. Who is one be my dad, four time cancer survivor, found out earlier this week that on his annual checkup that he is still cancer free. So we're amazing for that amazing and the big thing, the big thing with that just a life living a life of resiliency and being able to work through any obstacle that life does throw your way, obviously, my life has been nowhere near as difficult as my grandfather's, and I've never had to deal with cancer myself, hopefully never. Will, but to be able to just understand that, if you there's certain things that are out of your control, but if you work hard and you you know, just stay positive and keep putting one foot in front of the other, you'll be able to, hopefully be able to get out of every situation that gets thrown your way. And I've tried to live my life that way as best I can, and I've had my own share of difficulties, and we, like we all have, and so that's the biggest takeaway from both of them. And obviously there's 50,000 other Yeah, I could mention, but those

Lonnie Preis  15:34
are the two. That's great. So my last question related to this, is, if you, and this is maybe hard to sum it up, but in a few words, especially with the I would say, with your grandfather, with this mentor of yours, what if you could they're watching right now, or they're right here. What would you like to say to him? If you could say something to them?

Leanne Nichols  15:56
I mean, just thank her for putting in time she didn't have to. She spent a lot of extra time with her students, like mentoring, and even just, you know, on the hard days when we struggled in classes or just struggled in personal life, she would stay late just to chat with us or make sure we were okay. And, you know, take us through group like bonding, team bonding activities with the athletic training students, and she gave a lot of her own personal time. So I would just thank her for for being invested in us.

Lonnie Preis  16:28
Awesome. Well, if no one, if you tell no one else about us doing this, make sure she watches so she can hear you say that that's that was awesome. Lovely. How about you, David?

David Victor  16:35
And just want to say thank you to them. They like I said, they their their lives, gave me the opportunity to their hard work, gave me the opportunity to work in collegiate athletics, which is my dream job. And, you know, I didn't. I could have had to go work in a factory. I could have had to go, not that there's anything wrong with that, but like, there's a lot of different ways my life could have gone and because of my parents and because of my grandpa, both sets of grandparents, but because of them, being able to provide the way they did for their own families allowed me to be in a position where I got get to pursue my dream on a daily basis. Awesome.

Lonnie Preis  17:20
Awesome. Thank you both for sharing. That's great. All right, we're moving into our next segment. You ready for this? It's called Rapid Fire, and so that means rapid like, I'm gonna ask you both a question. We'll go back and forth. Like, start with the end, go to you, then start with you. Back and forth you both answer the same question. There's gonna be, this is a lot of some more jovial type questions, but there's a couple more serious ones in there too. So just get your mind's got to be dialed in. Are you dialed in? Right now? I'm dialed in. You want to talk in an intense voice like this? I'm always intense. Okay, all right, we're good. All right. Leanne, you want

Leanne Nichols  17:54
to start? You want him to let me start?

Lonnie Preis  17:56
Rapid fire. Are we ready? Kylie, here we go. Leanne, we're off. Favorite

Leanne Nichols  18:00
sandwich, ham and cheese with mayo and mustard, boom.

Lonnie Preis  18:03
Favorite sandwich, Italian beef. Love it. Back to you. If you could only watch one TV show for the rest of your life, what would it be?

David Victor  18:11
That 70s show? Oh,

Lonnie Preis  18:13
man girl, okay, advice for freshmen. One word a one word piece of advice for a freshman. Confidence. Boom. We had that one, I think just recently.

David Victor  18:29
Do your job, just I don't know, I'm breaking the rules. Or three words

Lonnie Preis  18:34
I will say this. What Matt, I have to say this. Sorry to chime in. One person said, shower. I thought it was something. Somebody said one word advice, shower. But anyway, that's a great answer. Do your job. All right. Next one. Coming back to you, animal that you are most scared of

Unknown Speaker  18:47
spiders. I'm not scared of any. No

Lonnie Preis  18:50
animals whatsoever. Okay, back to you. You got a hot dog. You're staring at this hot dog. What are you putting on

Unknown Speaker  18:56
it? Mustard. Okay?

Lonnie Preis  18:59
Chili. Just chili, straight up

David Victor  19:01
chili. I mean, I eat hot dogs plain, but chili would be if I have to put something on it.

Lonnie Preis  19:06
Okay, you got a couple hours of free time, no obligations. What are you doing?

David Victor  19:11
Reading a book. Got it?

Leanne Nichols  19:14
I'm with my dog.

Lonnie Preis  19:15
Hanging with the dog. Love it. If you could do one thing over from your past, or try something new that you didn't haven't tried before. What would it

Leanne Nichols  19:31
be? Okay, wait. I can either redo something for my past or try something new.

Lonnie Preis  19:34
Yeah, sorry, we Yeah. We're giving you two options to make it easier.

Leanne Nichols  19:39
I would try something new, and I would probably go bungee jumping.

Lonnie Preis  19:43
There's this is crazy. We have three exact answers in these questions from our previous two people, which are two women's soccer players. You got to watch that literally, I'm going to see if there's more. This is weird.

David Victor  19:53
Okay, I'm going scuba diving, trying a new experience. I've never done it before. Love it.

Leanne Nichols  19:59
Love it. Okay, it's amazing

David Victor  20:02
is, yeah, I'm acrophobic, so I am not doing bungee jumping.

Lonnie Preis  20:06
Yeah, I wouldn't be doing that either. Okay, these are I like these next ones coming up. I like them all, but quirkiest, oddest, unique thing about you. Let our audience know I'm

David Victor  20:17
a deaf, blind, left handed Jewish individual. Okay, how

Leanne Nichols  20:23
am I supposed to? Top that, it's not a competition.

Leanne Nichols  20:37
I have no idea. Okay, that's fine. Yeah, I don't think I'm really that quirky.

Lonnie Preis  20:42
Okay, we're not gonna, well, I'm not gonna put David and say, Tell tell us what you think is quirky. We don't do that. That's fine. Okay, coming back to you, weirdest thing you've ever eaten or tried to eat,

Leanne Nichols  21:00
Ecuador. They eat guinea pigs. Oh,

Lonnie Preis  21:03
gosh. Oh, Dan, you tried

Leanne Nichols  21:04
it. We tried a little bit.

David Victor  21:06
Sarah, if you're if you eventually watch this, do not listen silly and or hold it against her. My fiance owns guinea pigs. As

Lonnie Preis  21:16
I just have to ask you, how was it tastes like chicken? No, oh, sorry, Bob, I'll cover your ears.

David Victor  21:25
David, I've had Gator meat. How was it tastes like dark meat chicken.

Leanne Nichols  21:31
Okay, good Gator. Brett's a good one.

Lonnie Preis  21:33
Nice. Your biggest pet peeve.

David Victor  21:39
Good Lord, I have so many when people don't use their turn signal while driving.

Lonnie Preis  21:46
Oh, nice. That's our first driving pet peeve. There'll be more, yes,

Leanne Nichols  21:51
when coaches don't tell me they change the schedule.

Lonnie Preis  21:54
Oh, snap, you heard that. If anything comes from this podcast, coaches let them know when the schedule changes. Drop in the mic. Last question. Last question for rapid fight, yeah, you can't drop this last question. Describe yourself David, in three words, just three words come you got to do this. No one's off the hook on this

David Victor  22:20
kind boom, hard worker, that's one or two, that's two,

Lonnie Preis  22:25
that's one word. Okay, hyphen and

Lonnie Preis  22:35
fun, okay. Leanne, three words

Leanne Nichols  22:38
I would say, strong, ambitious and friendly.

David Victor  22:43
Love it. I love there's a very Slytherin answer right there. Ambitious. I like it. I like it. Hey. Nothing wrong with again.

Lonnie Preis  22:50
Slytherin, guys, that was rapid fire. Thank you so much. We really got to know you very good. Give yourself a round of applause. Okay, our last segment is called Showtime. Show us what you know, and little we're competitive here this, you know, you guys in the athletic department, so this is a chance, okay, and Leanne, the expectation that you're going against the trivia guy, okay, I know what. But if you win this, think about this. The bar is like, Okay, if he wins, everyone you know, I would expect myself to lose every single trivia thing, but if you win, oh, bragging rights, forever. Okay. So we asked them before audience what topic they wanted to go with with our little segment called Showtime bones is the topic. So how we play this game is we will start off with you, Leanne, you say a bone of the body. You then, David, have three seconds to say a different bone to the body. Okay, if you do not answer within three seconds, she automatically wins. If you repeat a bone that she said

David Victor  23:51
and I ask a clarifying memory I'm gonna forget. Can I ask a clarifying Yes? You may, yes. You may. Like, do, like the metacarpals, 123, like, do those No, no carpels and metacarp carpals and metacarpals. And then, like, the different parts of the skull. Those are all different, okay? All different ones. I

Lonnie Preis  24:11
have no idea of more than five bones myself. So she is not only going to be the she's gonna be the I'm gonna look to her if you say something off the wall and you think it's a bone and you're making something up, so she's gonna catch you in a lot of ways. Yeah. All right, so, oh yeah, sorry. This is from David, by the way, sea turtle from Orlando. Love it. All right. So, Leanne, we're gonna start this. Welcome to showtime. Leanne, you're on the clock, frontal,

Speaker 2  24:43
occipital, temporal, humerus, vertebrae.

Speaker 2  24:51
There's 15 of those. One rib, carpal, metacarpal, Alma, Brett.

Speaker 2  25:00
Radius, femur, tibia, fibula,

Speaker 2  25:07
you say femur, coccyx, sacrum, one clavicle, calcaneus,

Unknown Speaker  25:27
tarsal, metatarsal,

So for Jimmy John's gift card, student life@cleary.edu David, are you going to share with us our trivia question for the audience?
