Cougars Uncaged: A Cleary University Podcast

Cougars Uncaged, with Rylie Bjorkman, Devin Mackenzie, and Kiera Smith

Cleary University Marketing Season 1 Episode 7

This week on Cougars Uncaged, things get fun, chaotic, heartfelt, and downright hilarious as Lonnie and Kylie welcome three Cross Country & Track standouts — Kiera, Rylie, and Devin — for an episode packed with energy.

The trio opens up about their journeys to Cleary, including second chances, unexpected recruiting, and overcoming obstacles. They share what they love most about being Cougars, from family-like support to life-changing coaching from Coach Lorena. We explore their favorite hangout spots on campus, relive intense groundhog encounters, and dive into a very passionate (and divisive!) debate about the musical Wicked.

Listeners get a deeper look “behind the curtain,” with each athlete discussing personal inspirations — from Olympians to their parents — and answering rapid-fire questions that reveal favorite snacks, biggest pet peeves, dream superpowers, and even the weirdest things they’ve eaten (spoiler: worms are a theme).

The episode wraps with an impressive, lightning-fast 50-state challenge, a head-turning confession about someone eating a LIVE goldfish (yes, really), and a trivia question that could earn a lucky listener a prize.

It’s heartfelt, hilarious, and full of Cougar pride — 10/10 would listen again.

Lonnie Preis  0:01
Here we go. Keep it going, ladies and gentlemen, it is great to have you back and see you. Will slow down Cougars on page. We got Kylie Walker, Lonnie Creek, the Daniel Weller. It's good to see you again, and today our special guest. We are pumped. We can see you guys are jacked. We got Riley Bjorkman, we got Kira March, we got Devin McKenzie. It is awesome. You guys are laughing. You are jacked to be here. This is about to be like, just awesome, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah. How you guys feeling today? Good, good. You ready for this tired, yeah. Okay. Is there caffeine in these big gulps here? You just coming in? Uncaffeine. Uncaffeinated. Just ready to go? Yeah. All right. Love it. We're excited to get going. Kyle, you ready in the

Speaker 1  0:47
back? Born, ready. Born, ready.

Lonnie Preis  0:51
All right, here we go. First of all, we want to get to know you guys a little bit better, so we'll go around the horn and just want to hear about you guys, what you do, what year you are, if you're involved in anything, and how you came to Cleary. So Kira, we'll start with you.

Kiera Smith  1:06
I'm technically a junior, sophomore. It's up in the air both sports, okay, and I got to Cleary because I was given a second chance to run.

Lonnie Preis  1:16
So Love it. Love it. Great.

Rylie Bjorkman  1:18
I'm also a junior, and I actually dropped out of college. And then Kira was like, we need more girls to run on the cross country and track team. And kind of was like, You're, you're doing this. You don't really do a say. So that's, that's how I got here.

Lonnie Preis  1:34
So did you guys know each other before?

Rylie Bjorkman  1:37
Cleary, yeah, we were teammates at Lansing Community College.

Lonnie Preis  1:41
Okay, got it, yeah, got it. So you just said you're doing this, yeah?

Kiera Smith  1:45
I said, Hey, Coach is willing to give you a scholarship. You're not doing anything, so get your butt to howl.

Lonnie Preis  1:50
So boom, there you go. Recruiting, 101, get your butt to howl, baby. Come to clearing. Come on. All right, Devin, how about you?

Devin Mackenzie  1:59
I'm a fifth year, and I'm a transfer from Jackson College. I Our coach, Sarah finler, and I've known him since 2020 he recruited me back back then, when I was in high school, and he brought me over here when he got the job. So I spent a semester at Jackson while he was here, and then I came in spring of 24

Lonnie Preis  2:21
Okay, so you've been so you all been here two years

Devin Mackenzie  2:26
about this is after the semester of you? Yeah, two years, four semesters, and they're a little shorter. I've been here a

Lonnie Preis  2:31
year. Okay, these next questions will be interesting then. So you haven't been here as long as maybe some of our other guests, but in the time you've been here, you can answer this one of two ways. One, tell us what you love most about Cleary, or two, tell you who has impacted you the most since you've been here.

Kiera Smith  2:51
Can we answer it both ways? Yeah, absolutely. Um, I love like, the family atmosphere the most. It's changed, and it's a big change from where we were before at Lansing to now. Like it's a big difference, and I feel like both of us are thriving, and most impactful has probably been coach Lorena and Leanne. They both helped me a lot last fall to get back to competing this year. So

Lonnie Preis  3:16
awesome. Thank you.

Rylie Bjorkman  3:18
I'd also say Coach Lorena, he's like, super nice. And like, our last coach didn't really care about us personally. And like, anything going on, we're like, if you call coach at like, 2am and you're like, I need your help, he'll like, drop everything he's doing to be there for you. Awesome.

Devin Mackenzie  3:34
That's, that's great to hear. Great to hear. I would also say Coach Lorena. I was a red shirt freshman at Jackson, like tore my ACL I was hurt, and I'm slowly getting better, but he's given me a chance that I don't think I would have gotten many other places. So I don't know it just like means a lot to have someone that probably saw something in us that like no one else saw, or like ourselves even saw, felt like he let it happen. So it's nice.

Lonnie Preis  4:04
Love it. That's awesome. That's so great. That's so great. It's great that you all kind of have similar, similar feelings about that. There's a little different kind of question about clear, and then we'll move on to our next segment. But a specific spot, your favorite, specific spot on this campus,

Kiera Smith  4:21
I would probably have to say in wellness,

Lonnie Preis  4:23
where specifically in wellness,

Kiera Smith  4:26
probably our couch. It might be outside,

Lonnie Preis  4:30
outside the coach's office. Okay, all right,

Rylie Bjorkman  4:35
um, probably the like Groundhog burrow by the basketball.

Lonnie Preis  4:40
Okay, so funny. We had a big discussion in another podcast about the those friendly people. So do you go over there and hang out with it? Or, oh, no, I'm

Rylie Bjorkman  4:49
just aware of it, because I hate the groundhogs, and they're always over there, so I'm just hyper aware of that burrow.

Lonnie Preis  4:56
Have you had one chase you? Yes, okay, because I was on a I was on a jog. Was checking it out over on the other side campus, and I went into this one plastic container looked like a little pet thing, and there was one in there, and it chased

Rylie Bjorkman  5:07
me, yes, and they actually do chase you, okay? Because people feed them,

Lonnie Preis  5:11
yes. Then I've heard that too interesting. Kylie,

Kylie Walker  5:15
I may be part of the problem, because I do feed them.

Lonnie Preis  5:19
Okay, now it comes out. That's, that's why they keep multiplying. Okay, well, that's, that's, we have not had that look. Well, neither one of those locations. So that's good, Devin, how about you?

Devin Mackenzie  5:29
I don't want to say the same thing as Kira, but I do like, that's where I meet for practice every single morning. And they just put like a 70 inch TV in there, probably, and they're always playing sports center or something, and then runner up to say something different. Just down the hall on Chrysler, on the corner over there, there's that, like, lounge area, and I used to sit there and, like, eat dinner and do homework before my classes, when I was still in the dorms. And it's quiet. No one's ever there, but it's

Lonnie Preis  5:57
comfy. Love it. It is so cool, like when we asked this question to hear about specific spots that people can actually identify, like what you just talked about. I mean, that's that's awesome. Okay, we're moving on to a hot take section. This is a new segment is going to be very interesting, because we don't know where this is going to go, but you all wanted to kind of discuss wicked and just kind of your feelings, your passion, your whatever comes to mind when you get when you think about wicked. So I don't know, I don't remember which one of you loves, I love wicked. So let me, let us hear why, why wicked? What is so good about wicked?

Rylie Bjorkman  6:30
Okay, so, like, right now it's super big, because the second part of the movie is coming out, and it's just so, like, it's basically about, like, feeling left out, and just because you're different, people turn and believe that you're bad because you're different, and the music is phenomenal.

Lonnie Preis  6:46
Okay, so we got a good, like, a meaningful storyline,

Kylie Walker  6:50
all right, gotta jump in real quick. Oh yeah. Do you watch Dancing with the Stars? Yes. Did you watch the Dancing with the Stars? Wicked?

Lonnie Preis  6:57
Yes. Okay, so we're getting, so we're getting a lot of lot of positive vibes, energy for wicked. But what do you feel about wicked? I

Kiera Smith  7:04
hate the music. Okay, what annoys me? Why it's just like the most annoying sound on the face of the earth? I don't know how.

Devin Mackenzie  7:13
I can't stand musicals. Like going into the movie theater to watch wicked would be like the longest two hours of my life, like I watched a Willy Wonka movie, oh my gosh, and it

Speaker 2  7:23
was, you didn't like Wonka annoying, too. It was annoying. I don't like it what

Kiera Smith  7:28
I left the living room because it was annoying me.

Devin Mackenzie  7:32
But you guys like music. I like music. I just don't like musicals. I guess those two

Unknown Speaker  7:40
about, like, High School Musical.

Kiera Smith  7:42
No, never run a high school musical person.

Lonnie Preis  7:45
Okay, so can you do, you know, I don't know music that well, but what about the music? Is it just kind of, because it's,

Kiera Smith  7:52
it's like, super high pitched and, like, just, it's not high pitched is, have you heard them sing? Yes, you made me want no

Rylie Bjorkman  8:01
good deed is not high pitched. No good deed is annoying,

Devin Mackenzie  8:06
Devin. I don't know that song, but

Speaker 1  8:09
I probably can any of you hit the specialty note.

Kiera Smith  8:13
I think Devin should try Not a

Kylie Walker  8:18
chance. Oh, I think everybody needs to give it a whirl real

Lonnie Preis  8:25
quick. I don't know what we're doing.

Unknown Speaker  8:30
Literally, it's just it goes like

Devin Mackenzie  8:39
that. Oh, God,

Lonnie Preis  8:44
never get you can do it. I can't either.

Lonnie Preis  8:52
Kira, we'll wait for the wicked experts. Her face looks very happy, like he liked it. I used to sing in choir. Oh, are we good? Okay, so wicked. To wrap it up, great storyline, yes, give or take the music from people.

Rylie Bjorkman  9:15
Do you agree? Part Two comes out November 21

Rylie Bjorkman  9:19
is wicked a sponsor, if not, it should wicked. Sponsor

Unknown Speaker  9:21
us, please. Not yet, but now it will be free

Lonnie Preis  9:24
tickets for everybody who wants to check it out. We can go to the mirror. Oh, I like it. My wife, I will say My wife saw the first one. And we don't see a lot of musicals. She really enjoyed it. Did you

Rylie Bjorkman  9:35
see it? I did not see it. I'll go see the second part with your wife.

Unknown Speaker  9:41
Then wait. I found the note. Is everybody

Lonnie Preis  9:43
ready? Actually,

Lonnie Preis  9:53
guys, I think we were probably pretty I

Kiera Smith  9:55
think we compile all of our songs together. It'd be perfect. Yeah.

Lonnie Preis  9:59
Yes. All right. Thank you guys for getting off on the wicked, wicked training. All right, so now we're gonna get a little segment called it says behind the curtain, get to know you a little bit more. Okay, these are the questions. You guys don't be looking at my sheet. I'm not looking at it. I saw you look down. Okay. We are gonna ask you a question that you guys had. So first one we'll go around is, who would you like to meet someone that you've never met before? Who is it? And if they walk in this door, what would you ask them?

Kiera Smith  10:35
I would say Sydney McLaughlin lebroni, because she's absolutely phenomenal when it comes to racing. And I just asked her, like, how she continues to do it?

Lonnie Preis  10:48
Okay? Because she's, she's been doing it for a while.

Kiera Smith  10:51
Yeah, she's had, I think, two kids, yeah, so

Lonnie Preis  10:54
is she, is she planning on next

Kiera Smith  10:56
Olympics? Just broke a world record again.

Lonnie Preis  10:59
All right, that's good. Riley,

Rylie Bjorkman  11:01
um, I probably want to meet Lin Manuel Miranda. He wrote Hamilton in the music for Moana. And I just like ask him where he gets his inspiration from to write all these musicals.

Lonnie Preis  11:13
Okay, are you? Do you have a musical past singing? Yeah. Oh, do you Yeah? Interesting. Not. It wasn't Ariana Grande, though you don't want to. I mean, you'd meet her.

Rylie Bjorkman  11:23
I would love to meet her. Are you kidding, but, but that's

Lonnie Preis  11:27
good. No, I like that. Okay, Devin, how about you? Oh, I'm sorry. What would you ask? What would you ask? I

Rylie Bjorkman  11:32
already answered. Did you Yeah, what did you say? I want to where he gets his inspiration.

Lonnie Preis  11:37
Oh, that's right, that's right. I'm just so, I'm just so caught up in the wicked

Devin Mackenzie  11:42
This is one I know, like we had a little bit of time to think about, and I had kind of a hard time. But I think Greg Popovich, he's the Spurs. Well, he was the Spurs head coach. He coached for, I think, close to 30 years, and every player that's been under him and everybody around him has the utmost respect, and he is probably the best coach of all time in terms of, like, likability. He has championships, everything. So I probably just ask him how to be such a good coach, or something along the lines, because I want to be a coach someday, and I want to be good, and I want to, like, change people's lives and have a positive impact. And he seemed to do that.

Lonnie Preis  12:19
So, love it. Love it. And what would you like to coach

Devin Mackenzie  12:23
cross country, track and basketball eventually? Cool.

Lonnie Preis  12:27
Love it. Okay, we're gonna start with you, and we'll wrap back around this way this person walks in the door. You have a couple hours to spend with them. You can't do anything basketball related, musical related, track related. What would you do with Popovich and you got a couple hours?

Devin Mackenzie  12:48
I don't know. That's tough.

Devin Mackenzie  12:56
The only thing I think of, because I got to just want to talk to him, maybe, like a road trip, I don't know, like, this car, yeah, hop in a car. Go, go do something for a few hours.

Lonnie Preis  13:06
Hey, that's good. Somebody, yeah? Somebody said, Let's do something, like fishing with their person. And just, you know, something that you can do, relaxing, yeah?

Devin Mackenzie  13:12
Like, not super intense, like, you know, looking at each other and, like, yeah, like, just, but just relaxed. And, you know, whatever.

Unknown Speaker  13:20
Love it. Love it. How about you? I'd

Rylie Bjorkman  13:22
probably say a haunted house, because he's, like, a super funny person, and I just think it'd be fun to, like, see his reaction. I don't know

Lonnie Preis  13:31
that is I love that is a very creative and unique answer. I love it. How about

Kiera Smith  13:35
you? I'd say probably, like, obviously not right now, but like, go to a beach. I mean, maybe right now I've been when I was 30 degrees outside, but okay, just because it gives you something to do, you can distract yourself and still talk at the same time. So nice.

Lonnie Preis  13:51
Okay, now a little bit more personal and Riley, we'll start with you. Who is the person in your life that could still be living or passed away, who has impacted you the most, and how,

Rylie Bjorkman  14:03
I'd say my mom, she played basketball at Grand Valley and had a full ride, and was like, going places with that, and then she got in a super bad car accident and broke her pelvis and collapsed long and like, they told her she'd never like walk again or have kids? And she was like, Well, I'm going to do that. And then she still got offers to, like, try out for the WNBA, so she's really inspiring. Wow,

Lonnie Preis  14:30
that's awesome. That's great. We'll go to you. Kira, I

Kiera Smith  14:35
would say my grandma. She passed away in 2020 she worked really hard with my grandpa to build a life for my mom and my aunts and my uncles, and constantly, any meet that I had, she come and watch any like time that we needed babysitter, she'd come and pick us up. And then in 2015 she was diagnosed with ALS, and so she fought till her past, like last. Possible breath. She has skin and bone, and so she really inspired me to continue to fight no matter what. Like fight.

Lonnie Preis  15:05
That's that is inspiring. That's great. And was she, it sounds like she lived close, where you could see her quite a bit. She was

Kiera Smith  15:12
in Grand Rapids. So my entire childhood, we spent every weekend driving to and from Grand Rapids, especially in high school, it was every weekend.

Lonnie Preis  15:19
So that's awesome. That's great. Devin,

Devin Mackenzie  15:22
I would just say both my parents as a whole, like, I just they've been really supportive, but like, they haven't put much pressure. Like, home life is great. I couldn't ask for a better home life. And like, they got married young, had kids young. They just like lived life. They like brought us to church all the time, like, put that in us and made sure we passed school. But like, they weren't, like, pressuring about, Oh, you, like, you need to get A's, but it's just, like, a perfect balance. And I think they've, they're what's helped me, like, comfortably get through college and all that. Because if I ever went home and said, I don't know if I can do it, they'd probably be like, if that's what's best for you. That's okay. I'm about to graduate. So that's so cool. Yeah, that's awesome.

Lonnie Preis  16:09
That's great. Well, if, in addition to the 1000s of people are going to listen to this podcast, make sure you tell these people, obviously your family members, they'd love to hear about your gram and tell these people to watch and so they can hear what you had to say. That's awesome. Okay, segue into a different segment we call rapid fire.

Lonnie Preis  16:31
I couldn't find it. Okay? I like, I like the puzzle for effect, dramatic effects. Yes, all right, this is you're gonna get a question. We're gonna go around the horn. Are you gonna get the same question? Just, boom, boom, boom. And then we'll start with you. So you know you don't have as much time to think. And we got about eight or nine questions to get to know y'all. You ready?

Kiera Smith  16:52
How are we answering these like rapid fire, like, true or false? Or are they like,

Lonnie Preis  16:56
oh, no, you gotta think on spot. Ready? Ready? Advice

Kiera Smith  17:01
for freshmen, go out of your dorm. Don't stay in your dorm the entire time.

Lonnie Preis  17:05
Good advice. Same question

Rylie Bjorkman  17:08
all the way around. Meet new people. Don't just hang out with your team. Nice. I

Devin Mackenzie  17:17
would say the same. Meet new people. Don't, be a hermit.

Lonnie Preis  17:21
Okay, all right. Next one. Start with you. Riley, what's one food you can only eat? One food that you can eat every day?

Unknown Speaker  17:31
Probably pasta. Okay,

Kiera Smith  17:36
Mexican food. I'd say pasta with basil, Alfredo. Oh, a

Lonnie Preis  17:40
little specific good starting with you. Your go to study snack.

Devin Mackenzie  17:45
Oh, man, it's not a good habit, but a pop I need, yeah, like a mountain dew, or like a reward, like, I need to be able to sip on it. Get so much done. Take another sip. I love it's bad.

Kiera Smith  17:58
Mine is a bag of goldfish and a can of

Lonnie Preis  18:03
Mountain Dew, Brett,

Rylie Bjorkman  18:08
usually candy or blue Takis with sour cream.

Lonnie Preis  18:11
That's blue top with sour cream. You've never tried it? No, I know Takis, but that's interesting. I'll try it all right. Great. Next one. If you, if you had a superpower, what would it be?

Speaker 2  18:24
Teleportation, probably reading minds.

Lonnie Preis  18:28
Oh, very good. Super Speed. Super Speed. Your go to comfort, show or movie, wish, I thought you're gonna say wicked, but wish, okay,

Devin Mackenzie  18:45
right now, Bob's Burgers or American Dad.

Lonnie Preis  18:49
Love it. NCIS, interesting mix here. Very interesting mix. I don't know where we're at. Did we start with Oh, Devin is to you, if you could swap lives with someone for a day. Who would it be?

Speaker 2  19:03
LeBron, James and be our First Lady?

Rylie Bjorkman  19:12
Oh, I have no idea. Maybe Taylor Swift. That would be fun.

Lonnie Preis  19:16
Oh, yeah, that would be very fun. Good. One thing that's on your bucket

Kiera Smith  19:20
list, I want to go to Lithuania and Ireland, nice.

Rylie Bjorkman  19:26
I like to go to like Broadway and watch a show.

Lonnie Preis  19:32
Love it, the Broadway theme, biggest

Devin Mackenzie  19:34
thing right now, probably doing a marathon.

Lonnie Preis  19:37
Oh, love it. Okay, got a couple more. I this is one of my favorite questions. Weirdest thing you've ever tried to eat or have tasted?

Rylie Bjorkman  19:46
Oh, I was a weird child. I used to eat like worms and mud.

Lonnie Preis  19:50
Okay, I've been there. Can

Devin Mackenzie  19:55
you go to Kira first? I was gonna

Kiera Smith  19:57
say I've also eaten a worm and. Like they have freeze dried crickets. I have, like, different flavors. I used to eat those as a snack. We

Lonnie Preis  20:06
just had that in another podcast, people talking about crickets. I got, just got to ask you, we

Kylie Walker  20:10
used to eat them in Spanish class, like that used to be, like a grade you had to eat it in Spanish class, the cricket, yeah,

Kiera Smith  20:17
or, like, the scorpion suckers, yes.

Lonnie Preis  20:20
Interesting. I'm giving you some time here. The worm thing.

Kiera Smith  20:24
It was a dare.

Lonnie Preis  20:26
Okay, did you chew it? Or did you just,

Rylie Bjorkman  20:28
no, you just swallow it alive. So, yeah, you can't chew it. You have to. You could chew it. No, you'll get grossed out.

Kylie Walker  20:35
Well, have you seen the movie How to Eat Fried Worms? No, that's sad. Yeah. If you haven't, you haven't, you got to watch it, because it's literally just about different ways to eat worms.

Lonnie Preis  20:46
Okay, I think I might be watching it. Now, back to you.

Devin Mackenzie  20:49
I'm pretty sure I've eaten a worm before, but I'm a baby about trying weird food I don't like, I don't like eating weird

Rylie Bjorkman  20:55
stuff. Speaking of eating weird stuff, Connor savage eats goldfish. Live live fish.

Kiera Smith  21:03
We had some in a fish tank last year that he ate one out of the fish tank in our

Lonnie Preis  21:07
living room in the dorms. I'll be asking him about that for sure.

Kylie Walker  21:13
Yeah, I knew about that because it was like, yeah, like, just swallowed the whole thing whole. And I was a little concerned for him for like, the next

Lonnie Preis  21:19
video I can show you after while it was alive. Yes, the problem I'd have with that is, like, you can maybe feel that before it dies, like,

Speaker 2  21:27
squirm. Oh, didn't hit you the second one, yeah,

Lonnie Preis  21:32
all right. News, News for everybody out there. By the way, I don't know what's going on with cross country track, but all of you are talking about eating worms. So

Kiera Smith  21:39
that's that's interesting. We're not normal. We run for a living. That's a good point.

Lonnie Preis  21:44
Okay, a couple more questions. I don't know where we're at. But biggest pet peeve,

Devin Mackenzie  21:49
loud chewing, loud

Kiera Smith  21:52
breathing, irritates me. I was gonna breathe. I Oh,

Rylie Bjorkman  22:04
when people walk slow like in front of you? Yes, that bothers me.

Lonnie Preis  22:09
That's a good one. That's really good. All three of those are very good. All right. Last one, only three words. We're gonna start with you, Kira, only three words. Describe yourself in three words. Loud.

Speaker 3  22:23
Annoying and funny, okay,

Rylie Bjorkman  22:28
it's a good mix, singing, dancing, confused,

Speaker 1  22:37
okay, I thought, I thought she was gonna go like dancing through life down happy Austin,

Kiera Smith  22:46
in our apartment called RCF, resting confused face. We all have it. What is it? We always just look confused, yeah. What it is, are you doing it right now? This is basically resting confused face.

Rylie Bjorkman  22:58
Yeah, I always am, like, just sitting there, like, and Kira was like, Let's do you have a pat?

Devin Mackenzie  23:08
I don't think so. Okay, I might that I'm aware of. I can let you know what are

Rylie Bjorkman  23:14
your three words Devin

Devin Mackenzie  23:17
say hard, working, stubborn and
