Cougars Uncaged, with Jacob Hayley and Brody Hurt

Cleary University Marketing Season 1 Episode 9

In this episode of Cougars Uncaged, Lonnie Preis and Kylie Walker sit down with Jacob Haley and Brody Hurt—two highly involved Cleary University students who bring energy, heart, and personality to campus life.

Brody, a freshman student-athlete, shares his journey to Cleary after a season-ending injury, his passion for soccer and coaching, and how Cleary’s coaches helped reshape his future. A ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Cougars on cage with the death dwellers. Ali Walker, Lonnie priest, and today we are here with Brody Hurt

Lonnie Preis  0:16
and Jacob Haley. Welcome again to the show. I love that was insane. I like that. We might have to add that, like those three bangs at the end. Welcome to the show, great guys. It's been a long time coming. You guys volunteered for this. Welcome. How you guys feeling about being on the on the show?

Unknown Speaker  0:36
Feeling good. I'm ready. This

Unknown Speaker  0:38
is great. I've been waiting for this all weekend.

Lonnie Preis  0:40
I love it. I love it. Well, good. This is really about you guys getting a chance to know you learn a little bit about you have some fun. So first question is, and you guys can we'll start with you Jacob is, tell us a little bit about, you know, tell us your name again, what, what year you are, what you're studying, and any activities that you're that you're involved with

Jacob Hayley  1:02
here, yeah, I'm Jacob. I'm a grad student here studying data efficiency. I'm involved in eSports, track and field, deca, art club and student athlete leadership team.

Lonnie Preis  1:13
Nice, nice. Love it. Well rounded individual, involved in a bunch of stuff that's good. And were you involved in all those things throughout your career here?

Speaker 2  1:22
No, I started DECA last year in art club and salt this year. Good, good.

Lonnie Preis  1:27
Love it. How about you, Brody? My

Brody Hurt  1:28
name is Brody hurt and I'm a freshman here, and I'm associated with the soccer team. I also am a part of the varsity cod and valorant team. I'm also a part of the at night Bible study that's every Mondays. I try to go as much as I can, and I encourage everybody that's listening today to also go as well. It's a great time. That's pretty much it.

Lonnie Preis  1:47
So love it. You guys are highly involved, I'd say, as much as involved as anybody we've had on the show. Which is, which is awesome. All right, so let's talk about Cleary and how you guys came here. So the next question is, what brought you to Cleary. And then, along with that, who, who has had the biggest impact on you since you've been here? Obviously, you've been here a short time. You've been here a little bit longer. So we'll go back to you, Brody, and start with you. How did you end up coming to Cleary, and what and who has had the most impact on you?

Brody Hurt  2:17
Yeah. So it was my senior year of high school. I was playing soccer. I broke my ankle, and I was out for the whole season, and then so I really had no other option to go, like I didn't have anyone to go. I didn't really have a future. I really wanted to my initial plan was to go in and get my coaching degree and instantly start coaching, but I didn't want to end my senior season on an injury. So Dan bully actually hosted our preseason soccer camp where I broke my ankle and then so he was just like, look, I want to give you another chance at doing this. I'm going to bring you on to clear you see how you like it and stuff like that. So he brought me here, and I'm extremely blessed, and this season has been great, but he brought me here, and the biggest people that's like, what's it called, inspired me the most here so far. I'd say definitely the coaches, they really give me a bright side on about my future, like what I want to do and what the college life is like and what to expect for the next three years. So I'm excited to see what happens over the time.

Lonnie Preis  3:18
Love it. Love it. Thanks

Jacob Hayley  3:19
for sharing that, Jacob. How about you? Yeah. So I was a junior, and I was getting ready to graduate in December from high school, so I had a couple of offers for a few different sports. I had offers for football, volleyball and then track and field. So I got a message on an app called NCSA, and it basically was from Coach Lorena, and it said, Hey, we want to have you come down. And I was looking at Cleary, I saw I was close to home, which was nice. It's only like a 40 minute drive. Oh, nice. So I came down. I really love the visit, and I'm committed. And I guess the person who inspired me the most to like and helped me the most while that Cleary has been coach, Lorena, he's been there for me. He's been helping me, and he's been a big part

Lonnie Preis  3:59
love it. We hear that a lot on this show, Kylie and I, almost every athlete has said, probably their coach. We've had a couple talk about their, you know, staff and different people. But that's awesome. And that's, that's, I think, what is special about Cleary, you know, just the people you know, the people that are here to help you guys out. Two more questions kind of about this. You guys both mentioned what you're studying. 10 years down the road, if you're if people ask you these questions, maybe that annoys you. But 10 years down the road, what would be the dream job that you'd be doing? I'd want to be a software developer. Nice, there's money. There's some money in that. Yeah, for sure, I would have no clue. I'm just happy if I can get my computer on, let alone develop something. Kylie can can attest to that. Brody, how about you?

Brody Hurt  4:42
What would you be doing? Um, I'd like to stay in the sports business. I'd like to be a coach. It's like I was saying earlier. The coaches really inspired me, because they're really giving me a heads up on what to see in coaching. I plan on being here in coaching here soon, so we'll see what gets for that. Love it. Love it. All right,

Lonnie Preis  4:59
what more? Question about Cleary, this is a little unique. Your favorite specific be as specific as you can your favorite spot on this campus?

Jacob Hayley  5:08
Okay, my favorite spot in the back of wellness, in coach lorena's office, there's a massage chair. I've fallen asleep so many times on that massage chair after practice, it's insane.

Lonnie Preis  5:20
So do you send alarm, or does somebody have to wake you up? No, I just wake

Cody Hurt  5:23
up on my own. I'll just, it's after practice. I'm exhausted. I'll go to the massage chair to relax and end up just falling asleep.

Lonnie Preis  5:30
I love it, that is. So we have massage chairs in different spots. That is the first person to mention that I love it. I haven't tried one out yet, so I think I'm gonna be checking that out. Brody, how about you specific spot? You can't say massage chair.

Brody Hurt  5:44
Can I say my dorm? Yeah, I can. I'd probably say my dorm, just because I like to sleep. So if you ask my roommates, especially my roommate Luca, he'd always say that I'm always sleeping. And so that's, that's pretty much the main spot. But if I had to choose like a, public space, I'd probably say, like the soccer field. That's where, like, I've been 90% of the year. It's where all the memories have happened so far. So that's pretty much it. Love it.

Lonnie Preis  6:11
So we're now into a very interesting segment called Hot takes, where you guys get to kind of share what you're passionate about, and maybe you know two different types of things. So you guys mentioned movies have some very interesting, I love it. Very interesting, really awesome movies that you guys like. So why don't you tell us about your movie, your the best movie that ever existed, and why you

Brody Hurt  6:35
want to go first? Yeah, Brody, all right, the best movie of all time is cars one. And I don't think anybody can, no movie can ever beat it. Okay, so it's about this car. It's a rookie and the like in the Piston Cup, I guess you would say, basically, he's very he got a high ego, you know I'm saying, and he wants to win and break record, break records in the first season, three way tie happens, and then they're traveling across the, I guess, the United States, and he gets lost in this town called Radiator Springs. And then the people that live there kind of like, try to lower his ego and stuff like that. And then later on, the whole story of him, he went missing. Like nobody knows where he was, because he was asleep. He fell out of the back of the the trailer, because he's a car, yeah, and then so basically they found him and they brought him back, and then he had them in their head. They joined him in the pit crew. And basically, instead of him winning, it basically taught him a lesson, just to, like, keep the ego down and just, like, just cherish the stuff with you, and then obviously it gets influenced down in the later movies that they come out. But I don't think anything can ever beat it. I've watched it ever since I was born, and I'm pretty sure my parents will watch this. I've watched it at least, like 10 times a year. It's just really good.

Lonnie Preis  7:55
Really 10 times a year. That's impressive. Too, good stuff. So it's the story. Liz, the storyline. What gets, I mean, that's you just described,

Brody Hurt  8:02
yeah, it's just a storyline. I guess it just like the iconicness, because it's like Owen Wilson. Owen Wilson, it's just like one of the greatest of

Lonnie Preis  8:08
actors all time. Yeah, yeah, the actor, yeah. It was tremendous. Do you, I assume the first, like a lot of movies, the first is the best, even, I'm sure you watch the others,

Brody Hurt  8:16
Oh, of course, yeah. I'm still waiting on cars for to be announced. All right? Like, I'd be jumping in my boots if I get, like, a notification, right now, is it supposed to happen? No, it's because, like, I don't know, funding Disney's change and all that stuff, but that's, that's a different conversation.

Lonnie Preis  8:31
Okay? All right. Jacob, over to you,

Jacob Hayley  8:34
let's hear it. My favorite movie of all time. It's free birds. It's about turkeys, and they're basically the, basically, the gist of the movie is, there's a spoiled Turkey who becomes the presidential pardon Turkey who tries to, like, convince all the other turkeys on the farm that they're going to be eaten and they're being raised to be eaten. So he gets pardoned, and he's pretty much free. So he goes to live at the president's house, and he eats pizza. He doesn't. He's not like your normal turkey. He's living in a good life. And basically, one day, he goes out into the woods and there's this other Turkey, and he like, he's kind of crazy, like, you don't know why he's like that. And he basically tells him, we need to go back in time to the first Thanksgiving to get turkeys off the menu. So they go back in time, and they're trying to survive being hunted. There's a love interest with one of the turkeys from the past. So you end up going through the movie. They're fighting the Native Americans trying to make sure that they're not going to be eaten. A bunch of the turkeys gets captured, and the main Turkey ends up telling the crazy Turkey that he needs to go forward in time to tell him the normal Turkey that he needs to go back in time to the first Thanksgiving to get turkeys off the menu. Okay, and that starts a timeline loop where that Turkey now. Realizes what he has to do to let all the other turkeys get freed. So they end up freeing all the turkeys, and they're like, hey, what can we eat? It's Thanksgiving. So then they order a bunch of pizzas from the future and bring them into the past. And then so from then on out, Thanksgiving is celebrated pizza instead of turkeys.

Lonnie Preis  10:23
That's first of all, I've obviously, I've seen cars. I have not seen that highly.

Kylie Walker  10:28
I have seen it. It is my family's favorite movie to watch before Thanksgiving. It is so

Lonnie Preis  10:33
good, is it? Is? I feel bad saying this cartoon,

Kylie Walker  10:36
yeah, yeah, it's a cartoon, but it's so good you have to watch it.

Lonnie Preis  10:40
So I gotta ask, do you eat turkey for Thanksgiving?

Jacob Hayley  10:44
I actually don't. I'm not a big RT guy. So are you a ham guy or what? No, I cook a ribeye every Thanksgiving.

Kylie Walker  10:50
No, he eats pizza. Did you miss the whole point of the story?

Lonnie Preis  10:53
Ever since that moment, I've eaten pizza at every Thanksgiving, which I'll eat a ribeye. All right, this is a totally different take on hot takes, y'all. But I love it, because we just got, you know, you guys should be movie critics. You could go into start your own podcast just critiquing movies. That'd be actually pretty fun. I have not seen cars in years. Makes me want to see it, and I definitely am going to check out free birds. Okay, we'll go to the next segment. This is called behind the curtain. That's pretty cool. Well played. All right, this is just to get you all get to know you a little bit better. So first question is, if you had an opportunity to meet anyone living or somebody who's passed away, who you have not met before, who would that person be, and what would be the first question you'd ask them?

Brody Hurt  11:48
I think you have your answer. I gotta think for a sec. Okay, I kind of have an answer. Okay, so if I were to, okay, if I were to meet someone and ask them a question, this would tie back to, I guess it would tie back to soccer. It'd be Cristiano Ronaldo. It'd be to ask him the question would be, what kept you going? Because, like, when he was little, he went through the struggles like he had nothing. There's a picture out there where he was sweeping the street back in Portugal before he had his soccer career. So it's really just like, what kept him going? Like, why did he keep on going? Right? So that's, always that's something that I go in my mind every day. Is like, keep going.

Lonnie Preis  12:23
Oh yeah, yeah, for sure, phenomenal, phenomenal question, Jacob, how about you? I'd go with

Jacob Hayley  12:27
Alec Turing. He basically invented the computer and artificial intelligence way back in the early 1900s I feel like it'd be interesting to get a peek into what his mind was like and his thought process was, oh, when he was developing all this, especially since all this is brand new at the time, yeah, I think it'd be interesting to learn.

Lonnie Preis  12:46
Very interesting. All right, here's the follow up question to this. If you have three hours to spend with these two individuals, you can't do anything soccer related. You can't do anything computer related. What would you do with these guys? Golfing? Golfing? Why golf?

Speaker 2  13:04
Well, I can, I can play around a golf in around three hours, and then, you know you're chit chatting the whole time. Yeah, I get to know him as a person more. So I feel like golf's the perfect thing for the love it.

Lonnie Preis  13:14
We've had golf from a few people. Obviously, Michael Jordan was one of some of you, some of you want to be obviously, you're gonna go play with Jordan because he loves to golf anyway. That's a great great answer, yes.

Speaker 3  13:24
I'd say, I'd say him, just like, take me around Portugal and just like, know, the the culture or stuff like that, because when I get older, I really would like to travel. You know, that's there's nothing better than leaving the country. Okay, well, I wouldn't say it like that, but like, obviously, like going abroad and seeing what other things there are in life, especially stuff that's not here. So I think the culture aspect of Portugal that I've like read online is something really nice. And so that would be something that I'd really look forward to, especially with you know, him by my side, teaching me everything.

Lonnie Preis  13:55
That'd be great. It's, it's funny to say that we had, we've had some of the international students on the podcast, and to hear their their impression of America. But then I think having as many international students as we do on campus, obviously, I think that has really made people want to check out right where they live, yeah, as well. So I think that's

Speaker 3  14:14
something that clearly does really well, is bringing in the international students, and then it just really just brings everybody into one it's just like, well, you came here. It makes me want to go over there. And just like, you know, we can compare cultures. It's so great. That's something I've loved about clear that I've been here for the past few months.

Lonnie Preis  14:29
Yeah, I'm making notes on restaurants. Speaking of food, ribeyes, I'm making notes on restaurants to go check out. When Kylie and I, if we go, we go travel. I got some of the best restaurants over in England to check out, all

Speaker 3  14:39
right, yeah. So I was, I was gonna say, like, some of my English friends from the soccer team are just talking about something called, like, Nando's. I want to go try that.

Lonnie Preis  14:46
All right. I don't know if that came from the podcast, but we asked it was the two,

Kylie Walker  14:49
no, that was the exact restaurant during the podcast.

Lonnie Preis  14:52
Yeah. They talk about it all the time, Pizza Express, which sounds like fast pizza, but it sounds like a pretty nice pizza place. So. To keep that in mind, if you ever go to England, okay, little bit different, I guess a little bit more personal. One person from your past or present, but probably your past. I'm sorry, one person from your past who has impacted you the most, and how are they? What kind of impact have they had

Speaker 3  15:20
on you? You want to go first? Yeah,

Speaker 2  15:23
that person to me was my godfather, Sean brendt, senior. I met him when I was around 13, and he's been coaching me up through track life, school, whatever it is, he's been helping me, we coach a football team together. Oh, really, he's been a big part of my life, and I would not be the person I am today without him.

Lonnie Preis  15:41
That's so awesome. That's awesome. How about you?

Speaker 3  15:43
I would probably i It's been my past. It would be my papa, Brody. I was named after him. His full names were off Brody, so like, I took, kind of, like, took his name when I was born. He kind of like, inspired me ever since, like, since I was little. I think he died. He passed away during covid. And so that really hit a spot. And I never really got to say goodbye, because obviously, that was really that was really, it was really tough time. So but up and before that, the whole time, he really just, like, was telling me, just like, go for what you want, and don't look back, because if you look back, it'll keep you hesitant. And so all the memories that I have of him has just like, been great memories. So it's always just been like that. And I hope, I hope he's having a great time where he is right now up above, and I hope, hope to know that he's well. So yeah, thanks for him.

Lonnie Preis  16:26
Yeah, thanks for sharing that. And I don't know, you know, we have 1000s, if not millions, of viewers, maybe 1000s, we'll see to millions. Yeah, but definitely tell you know, have, if anybody watches this, you know your family would love to hear this family, and obviously, you're still, obviously with this person. Are you still coaching football now? Season ended, okay, all right, where do you guys? Coach? Flynn. Flynn, love it. Well. Thank you guys for sharing. All right, we're moving forward to a less, much less serious topic. It is rapid fire segment. Now this time, you guys don't have a lot, you don't have time to think it's like first thing that comes to mind. We're going to go back and forth rapid fire with some kind of crazy off the wall questions. Okay, you guys ready for this? I'm gonna start with you. Then we go. You will just kind of go back and forth. But you both, you both get to answer the same one, but you cannot repeat. It's not a game, but you can't repeat the person's question. All right, here we go. Before game. Your go to hype song before a game or a big event, what's your hype song? Low Down by little baby. Oh, the winner takes it all nice. Love it. Favorite restaurant in Howell or this area, diamond. Oh, Steakhouse.

Speaker 3  17:40
Nice. Cleary pub. Or, you know what that is over there, downtown, Cleary pub.

Lonnie Preis  17:45
What's funny? What's funny is a Cleary pub, there's no like, they're not related to the clearies, really, no, it's not related. Clearly.

Speaker 3  17:52
They called it Cleary pub. I thought it was just like a mutual thing.

Lonnie Preis  17:55
Their names are Cleary, but they're not. There's no connection so, but that's great. Shout out to Cleary pub at diamonds. You're not our sponsors yet, but sponsor the podcast. I don't know if you guys are concert goers. Well, hopefully you are best concert you've ever been to.

Speaker 3  18:14
I haven't been to one, but if I were to go to Drake, okay?

Unknown Speaker  18:19
Travis Scott,

Unknown Speaker  18:21
nice. Very good. Fair enough.

Lonnie Preis  18:22
You guys have already said favorite movie of all time. Let's go to tell if you have, if you're ready to put on the TV and watch the television show. What would

Unknown Speaker  18:29
it be? Either one piece or Better Call Saul

Lonnie Preis  18:32
nice SpongeBob. These are the quickest answers. I can tell you guys are Esports players because you are just quick.

Speaker 3  18:39
It's always SpongeBob. And car is what I grew up with. Oh, very good.

Lonnie Preis  18:43
Cough, coffee or tea, tea, tea. Interesting. Hidden, your hidden talent.

Unknown Speaker  18:50
I've played the piano for 15 years.

Lonnie Preis  18:52
Oh, make a mental note.

Speaker 3  18:54
Yep, I'll come up with good excuses that's interesting. I can cover myself up sometimes you're coaching. Coach. No, no. Coaches are watching.

Lonnie Preis  19:06
So Jacob, I'm just throwing this out here. Little plug. Kylie and I are in works of having a talent show here on campus, really, if you can tickle the ivories, you should, you should sign up chance to win some cash, definitely. All right, sorry, I'm off on a change favorite sport here to watch at Cleary, besides the sports that you're involved with, hockey, high school hockey. Oh, very good. Favorite sandwich.

Speaker 2  19:33
It's the Italian BMT, whatever. It's called subway. That's my

Lonnie Preis  19:39
wife's go to Italian BMT,

Speaker 3  19:41
I'd say the BLT. To be honest, I like the BLT at

Lonnie Preis  19:44
Subway, yeah. Oh, subway sponsors, we got four more questions. One word piece of advice for freshmen. One word school, word determination. Good. What's the weird? This thing you've ever eaten or tried

Speaker 2  20:03
chicken feet or lamb brains. How I Okay?

Lonnie Preis  20:08
Would you go back and do it? Would you try them again? Oh, I'll

Speaker 2  20:11
eat chicken feet right now. You put a bag of chicken feet in front meal. I'll eat it.

Unknown Speaker  20:15
Yo, hello.

Lonnie Preis  20:18
We're gonna pause this. I got it here. How do they what do they make? What do they taste like, and how? What do they look like?

Speaker 2  20:25
Tastes like chicken. It's literally, it literally looks like chicken feet like if you were to cut the feet off a chicken and eat it tastes like that. But just don't think that you're eating someone's feet. Just think, Hey, I'm eating chicken, and it tastes really good. I'm not even gonna lie.

Lonnie Preis  20:40
Where do I'm just curious, because I've never heard of this. I've heard of a lot of weird things. Where did you try this for the first time?

Speaker 2  20:45
I lived in Taiwan for a while. Oh, there. It's really good. I'd recommend it.

Speaker 3  20:51
Okay, that might be top five. Like, just most diabolical takes.

Lonnie Preis  20:55
That is chicken. We got to bring that in at a next staff, like, when we do the eating challenges, we got to find chicken feet. I'm sure they sell them somewhere around

Unknown Speaker  21:04
here. I know a place that sells them. You do? Yeah, we'll talk

Lonnie Preis  21:07
after the show. See, we're it's a given, given, give and take here. All right, that's insane. Couple more questions. Your biggest pet peeve?

Speaker 3  21:16
Oh pet peeve. I say, just like people saying something, and then they just don't do it. Oh, it's like, no follow through. Yeah, they don't follow through. That really, itches me. Okay, I'll be honest.

Speaker 2  21:31
Probably like people who always think they're right, and when you show them that they're wrong, and you give credible sources backed by credible people, they still won't admit they're wrong.

Lonnie Preis  21:41
Okay, that's a that's, that's also a good one. Yeah, very good. All right. My our last question for rapid fire describe we'll start with you, Jacob, describe yourself in three words. Chill.

Speaker 2  21:54
Cool guy, yeah, chill, chill.

Lonnie Preis  21:58
Cool guy, wow. Okay, he's the first one you guys, this is, like, groundbreaking, your first one to put it all together. You don't have to do that, but

Speaker 3  22:05
I'd say friendly, loyal and, I guess caring. I don't know, I don't know if that really dials into friendly, but it's just like, I'm a man of the people, like I put people in front of me. So I guess it's that's kind of like my passion. That's like, if you go and ask people, like, who is Brody, like the coaches, for a chance, they'd be like, he's a man of the people, awesome. So I'm like, President type stuff. But okay, yeah, that's

Lonnie Preis  22:31
about 30 words. But that's okay. We do that to everybody. It's hard to say just three. Yeah. Okay. Last segment is called Showtime. Show us what you know this is, this is the time you guys are competitive dudes. You know games, you know eSports. You guys have chosen to compete in a contest related to video games. How we play this game is, I like it. There we go. She is very she's dialed in. We're gonna start. You're gonna say a video game, then you're gonna say a video game, and we are gonna go back and forth. We might be here if this podcast goes two hours and we're just here. You guys just keep, keep. I'm just kidding. It's not gonna go that long. Fair enough you have three seconds to say a video game that the other person has not said. If you repeat something the other person loses, or if you can't think of something in three seconds, okay, now, Kylie probably knows video games better than I do. I know like Atari back in the day and intent. You know, I hardly know any. So you guys got to check each other to make sure you're not just making up words, okay, like the video game, wood or pencil or, you know,

Speaker 3  23:43
